déi jonk gréng: Open Call for Japanese Officials to stick to Kyoto

Dear Honorable Prime Minister Naoto Kan,
Dear Honorable Ambassador to Luxembourg Takashi Suetsuna

We are extremely concerned to hear that at the opening of the UN climate talks in Cancun, Japan announced its intention to abandon the Kyoto Protocol - the only treaty that could tackle growing greenhouse gas emissions by rich countries. This treaty was agreed to in Japan, when your country showed leadership while chairing the third Conference of the Parties under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1997. So We am even more surprised at the announcement. These UN climate talks in Cancun are a critical moment in regaining credibility of the negotiating process. The actions of developed countries are crucially important in rebuilding trust between the negotiating parties. We are concerned that Japan, in taking this position, is failing to recognise its own historical responsibility for the current climate challenge. Even worse, it is undermining the outcome of the talks and seriously threatening the progress needed in Cancun. We urgently call on you to reconsider your position and stop stalling the climate talks. We urge all rich countries, including Japan, to agree to cut your emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2020, without resorting to carbon offsetting, and to commit to this under a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol. We look forward to your response.

Yours sincerly, with the most deepest and mutual sympathies and utmost respectfulness.
